Zero Margin for Error: Trojans Chase League Glory While Eyeing District Climb

ELIZABETHVILLE — As the calendar turns to May, the Upper Dauphin Area Varsity Trojans find themselves at a critical crossroads. Following an 8-3 setback against Juniata this past Friday, the Trojans are navigating two vastly different postseason landscapes: a comfortable seat in the conference tournament and a frantic climb for a spot in the District III bracket.
The Juniata Jolt
Friday’s clash in Mifflintown proved to be a reality check. The Trojans fell behind early as Juniata capitalized on a three-run second inning. While Lancer Gorgas stayed hot with a 2-for-3 performance and Hunter Grassmyer flashed his speed with a triple, the Trojans' bats struggled to find the "big hit," leaving several scoring opportunities stranded. Ian Troutman provided a silver lining in relief, yielding only one earned run over four innings, but the Indians' 10-hit attack was ultimately too much to overcome.
The TVAA Safety Net
The good news for Trojan fans lies in the Tri-Valley Athletic Association (TVAA) standings. Despite the loss, Upper Dauphin (9-5 League) remains the frontrunner for a Wild Card spot.
Under the TVAA’s unique format—which takes the two division winners and the next two best records overall—the Trojans currently hold the #3 seed. With a significant gap between them and the bottom half of the West division, the Trojans are likely headed to the TVL semifinals on May 11, likely facing a powerhouse like Halifax or Greenwood.
The District III Mountain: A Tougher Climb
While the league playoffs look secure, the PIAA District III Class AAA rankings tell a more urgent story. In a field where only the top six teams advance to the postseason, Upper Dauphin currently sits on the outside looking in at #9.
Rank | School | Rating | Status |
6 | Wyomissing | 0.5565 | IN |
7 | Pequea Valley | 0.5399 | OUT (Bubble) |
8 | Lancaster Catholic | 0.4948 | OUT (Bubble) |
9 | Upper Dauphin | 0.4718 | OUT (Work to do) |
The Trojans face a mathematical hurdle known as "Opponent’s Winning Percentage" (OWP). Because many of their league opponents have sub-.500 records, the Trojans’ Power Rating hasn't climbed as fast as teams like Lancaster Catholic or Wyomissing, who benefit from "stronger" schedules.
Final Week: The "Elimination" Mentality
To leapfrog three teams and crack the District Top 6, the Trojans likely need to run the table this week. Every game now carries the weight of a championship final:
Monday vs. Susquenita: A must-win to protect their TVAA standing and avoid a ratings collapse.
Wednesday @ Line Mountain: A road test where focus will be paramount.
Saturday vs. Tulpehocken: This non-league finale could be the most important game of the year. Tulpehocken is a solid AA opponent, and a win there would provide the "strength of schedule" boost the Trojans desperately need to move the needle in the District III rankings.
The Trojans have the arms and the bats to compete with anyone in the area. The question for this final week is whether they can find the consistency to turn "potential" into a District playoff berth.
One thing is certain: In Elizabethville, the "Second Season" has already begun.
