Shippensburg, PA — It was a weekend defined by sheer power, technical precision, and the ultimate showcase of a successful local partnership. Propelled by a historic two-day performance from their throwing program, the Millersburg girls' track and field team secured multiple podium finishes at the PIAA District III Class AA Championships and officially qualified three athletes for the state tournament.
The spectacular performance across Friday and Saturday was fueled entirely by Upper Dauphin Area students who compete for Millersburg through the schools’ athletic co-operative program.
The team set a dominant tone on Friday during the opening session of the field events. In the discus throw, Millersburg utterly overwhelmed the competition by placing three athletes in the top six. Junior Jacelyn Henninger spearheaded the Friday effort with an exceptional throw of 107 feet, 11 inches, taking second place in the district. Senior Reagan Wentzel followed closely in fourth place with a mark of 105-07.00, while sophomore Vivian Romberger seized sixth place with a strong 98-07.00 performance.
Friday's success quickly expanded into the javelin throw, where junior Jada Dillard put on a clinic. She launched a massive throw of 114 feet, 5 inches to capture her own individual silver medal. Romberger added to her stellar opening day by fighting her way onto the javelin podium as well, placing eighth with a throw of 99-00.00 to lock down another crucial top-8 medal for the program.
Millersburg's Friday field success extended beyond the throwing circles into the horizontal jumps, thanks to an outstanding performance by Kate Rothermel. In the triple jump, the junior leapt her way onto the district podium, securing a fifth-place finish with a distance of 33 feet, 7 inches. Sophomore Falon Savage also made a strong Friday showing in the triple jump field for the co-op, placing 10th overall with a final mark of 32 feet, 2.75 inches.
As the competition rolled into Saturday, the team maintained its elite form in the shot put ring. Wentzel led the charge, delivering a phenomenal effort by launching a throw of 36 feet, 9.75 inches to claim the silver medal and cross the definitive state-qualifying threshold. Joining her on the Saturday podium was Dillard, who secured fourth place with a top mark of 33-11.75. Henninger completed the co-op's strong shot put display by finishing 10th overall at 30-09.00.
Saturday also saw Rothermel showcase her versatility in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches to tie for ninth place overall. On the track, sophomore Audrina Hoover proudly represented the team in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 19.21 seconds in a highly competitive preliminary field to finish 26th overall.
Thanks to hitting the necessary state-qualifying marks and performance thresholds, the Upper Dauphin Area trio of Wentzel, Henninger, and Dillard have all officially punched their tickets to the PIAA State Championships.
Representing the Millersburg co-op program, the talented athletes will travel to Shippensburg University this coming weekend to test their skills against the best throwers Pennsylvania has to offer.
