Hit-for-Hit, but Not Out-for-Out: Trojans Drop TVAA Slugfest

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA — In a game where the final box score showed both teams deadlocked with 10 hits apiece, the Upper Dauphin Area Trojans learned a difficult lesson in efficiency on Monday. Despite a powerful showing from the top of the lineup, a persistent strikeout bug in the middle of the order stalled the Trojans in a 10-6 loss to the Susquenita Blackhawks.

The story of the afternoon was a tale of two halves of the lineup. While the Trojans consistently put runners on base, they struggled to bring them home, ultimately fanning 18 times against a sharp Susquenita pitching staff.

Leading from the Front

The top of the Trojan order gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about early. Lead-off man Tyler Minier and first baseman Karson Engle were relentless, combining for five of the team’s hits. Engle turned in a stellar 3-for-5 performance including a double, while Minier went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.

Hunter Grassmyer followed suit, reaching base twice and driving in a run, and pitcher Conner Wenrich helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 from the ninth spot.

The Middle-Order Mow-Down

The momentum frequently hit a wall, however, in the heart of the order. In a staggering statistical trend, the #5 through #8 batters accounted for 12 of the team’s 18 strikeouts. These empty trips to the plate often came with the "table setters" in scoring position, leaving the Trojans unable to bridge the gap as Susquenita’s lead widened.

Defensive and Pitching Grinds

Conner Wenrich took the mound for UDA, battling through 5.0 innings of work. While he kept the Trojans in the game by striking out two and limiting the Blackhawks to four earned runs, the Susquenita hitters remained disciplined, drawing five walks to keep the carrousel moving.

Wyatt Troutman took the loss in a long relief effort, pitching 3.2 innings. He was hampered by a defense that committed three errors, providing the Blackhawks with the extra outs they needed to secure the four-run victory.

Moving Forward

Matching a high-powered Susquenita team hit-for-hit is a testament to the Trojans' offensive potential. However, as they look ahead in the TVAA schedule, the focus will undoubtedly shift toward two-strike execution and making contact in the middle of the order to turn those 10 hits into more than six runs.
