Trojans Fall Short Despite Late Rally in Top-Tier TVAA Battle

ELIZABETHVILLE — In a clash between two of the Tri-Valley Athletic Association’s heavyweight programs, the Upper Dauphin Area softball team saw their comeback efforts fall just short on Monday, dropping a 9-5 decision to a surging Susquenita squad.

Despite a relentless offensive performance from the top of the order and a late-inning surge that brought the tying run to the on-deck circle, the Trojans couldn't overcome a rocky fifth inning and a struggling bottom half of the lineup.

Top of the Order Shines

The Trojans' stars came to play, matching Susquenita hit-for-hit with 9 total knocks. Junior standout McKenna Jury led the charge, finishing the day 3-for-4 with a home run and a double. Miley Yeager sparked the early momentum with a triple, while Lydia Engle contributed a clutch double during a three-run sixth-inning rally.

Struggles at the Bottom of the Order

However, the production was heavily lopsided. While the top of the order consistently put runners on base, the bottom half of the lineup found it difficult to navigate the high-velocity pitching of Susquenita’s Kylah Fleisher.

The hitters in the 5-through-9 slots struggled to put the ball in play, going a combined 2-for-15 on the afternoon. Even more damaging to the Trojans' rally efforts were the 10 strikeouts recorded by the bottom half of the order. Fleisher’s dominance at the bottom of the card repeatedly stifled potential big innings and left UDA’s primary run-producers stranded.

Defensive Miscues and the Fifth Inning

While the lineup disparity was a factor, defensive miscues also hindered the Trojans' ability to contain the Blackhawks. Upper Dauphin was tagged with three errors, several of which extended innings for Susquenita.

After taking an early 1-0 lead, UDA surrendered four runs in the second and a decisive five-run outburst in the fifth. Yeager battled through 4.1 innings, striking out six, but the combination of defensive lapses and a lack of depth in the batting order proved too much to overcome.

Box Score Summary: Upper Dauphin Leaders

  • McKenna Jury: 3-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI

  • Miley Yeager: 1-4, 3B, 1 R

  • Lydia Engle: 1-4, 2B, 1 RBI

  • Amaya Hoffman: 1-3, 1 R, HBP

Looking Ahead

Though the loss is a setback in the race for the TVAA crown, the Trojans proved they can go toe-to-toe with the league’s best at the top of the card. The challenge moving forward will be finding more consistency throughout the entire lineup to provide backup for the heavy hitters.

Upper Dauphin will look to find more offensive balance and clean up the defensive side of the ball as they head into a rivalry matchup against Line Mountain on Wednesday
