NEWPORT, PA — The Upper Dauphin Trojans took a significant step toward leveling their conference record on Monday night, riding a dominant first-quarter performance to a 55-34 victory over the Newport Buffaloes.
The win moves Upper Dauphin to 3-4 in league play (6-7 overall), keeping them in the thick of the competitive Tri-Valley standings. Meanwhile, a young Newport squad continues to search for its first win, falling to 0-7 in the league and 0-10 overall.
A Quick Start in Newport
The game was largely decided in the opening eight minutes. Upper Dauphin’s defense swarmed the Buffaloes from the tip, fueling a transition game that Newport struggled to contain. By the end of the first quarter, the Trojans held a commanding 22-4 lead.
Newport showed resilience for the remainder of the contest, playing the Trojans evenly in both the second and third quarters (12-12 and 9-9, respectively). However, the early 18-point cushion allowed Upper Dauphin to maintain control and rotate their bench through the second half.
Leading the Way
For Upper Dauphin: Alana Bingaman led all scorers with 14 points, showcasing her range with three triples. Delaney Smeltz (11 points) and Paige Williams (10 points) also reached double digits in a balanced Trojan attack.
For Newport: Jillian Zerbe provided the bulk of the Buffaloes' offense, finishing with 11 points and going 3-for-6 from the charity stripe. Eliza Benner added 8 points in the effort.
